B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering covers both the field of Power infrastructure and Communication/ Network technologies which are becoming an integral part of Electrical Engineering. In addition, Electrical and Electronics Engineering covers subjects in Renewable energy sources and Bio-medical instrumentation. Technological advancements covering digital substations/ supervisory controls are also taught in the mainstream. Students are exposed to modern innovative areas.

The growing Indian economy needs pow­er engineers for the infrastructural devel­opments. Organisations like PGCIL, NTPC, EIL, TANTRANSCO, TANGEDCO, Indian Rail­ways and private power producers require Electrical and Electronics Engineering core students. Electrical Engineers are required for all sectors including IT who are the major power consumers, for energy man­agement/safety operations of equipment. With Electrical Engineering being a part of almost all aspects of the world, Electrical engineers will be in demand always.

The industry and technology are con­stantly changing. The power and energy industry is undergoing a lot of changes. We are now designing smarter grids, replac­ing power systems and changing the way people interact with energy. The world is moving towards distributed generation, increasing use of renewables such as wind and solar, distribution automation, sus­tainable development, Electric vehicles and addressing environmental issues. All these digital economy needs electrical en­gineers who can handle smart cities and smart grids. Integrating the conventional and renewable sources is of high priority which can only be handled by Electrical Engineers. This creates a huge opportuni­ty for electrical engineers and a promise of exciting careers.

Scope for higher studies in the main elec­trical discipline as well as interdisciplinary areas is possible, both classical and mod­ern. Research focus is on green environ­ment/ sustainable resources/developing alternate energy source/ innovation and modernisation of existing power networks to meet the global standards.

The key areas that further advance the field of Electrical Engineering are Energy Storage, Smart grid, Micro and Nano grids and Renewable energy. Recently, Electric Vehicles with wireless power transfer saw resurgence due to technological develop­ments.
